Improv Quilt Challenge 2019

During the year we’ll work together from start to finish.

Explore improv piecing, chunky hand quilting, no show binding and techniques in between.

Schedule of our Improv Quilt Nights:

February 21: Improv Sew Night / Bring your machine + scraps!

We will have a table to share your fabrics scraps on, you’ll be able to grab and stitch up a storm.

Bring your sewing machine and your scraps to add to the mix.

This will be a fun night to just stitch without thinking.

You’ll continue stitching your quilt top (you determine the finished size) during the year.

March 21: Technique Demo

Come see a new technique taught by our member Louise.

She’ll show us a fun way to add some pop into your improv quilt and maybe something you can use in your quilt.

June 20: Words in Quilts Demo

We’ll talk about using words. Ways to incorporate them into quilts.

Plus, different techniques and ways to sew them- from hand drawn designs, paper piecing to applique.

September 19: Chunky Hand Quilting Demo

Our own member Mary will walk us through hand quilting.

She’ll go over using DMC floss, pearl cotton or other thicker thread for hand quilting.

You will need to bring your completed improv quilt top so you can stitch that night and give it a try.

*Supplies list will be provided before the meeting.

November 21: No Show Binding Demo

Our own member Christine will show us the technique for adding a no show binding to your quilt top.

*Supplies and prep list will be provided before the meeting so you can bring your quilt top ready to go.

After the demo, you can start working on your own binding during the class.

December 19:

Improv Quilt Show!  Bring your finished quilt top to show them off during the meeting.

*we are hoping they will be shown in 2020 at the UQSM show as well.

This will be a great night to share what your process was, what you learned and to see some incredible quilts.

Quilty Stats:

Instagram handle: sarah_jwh

Quilty Experience:
Since 2011
Where are you From?
San Francisco Bay Area
How did you get started quilting?
I needed something to keep me busy during a rough time and found a stack of coordinating fabrics in my mom’s garage and made her a tree skirt
How did you get started doing the Hawaiian applique?
I liked the symmetry of Hawaiian applique, but wanted to “make it modern” so I cut a sort of four part paper snowflake with triangles and straight lines and just went for it. I really liked the way it looked so I kept doing different variations
Favorite block/trend (obsession)
flying geese
Favorite color
blue, esp navy
What are your favorite quilts/projects you’ve done?
I don’t think I could pick!
How many quilts have you started? Finished?
30
What do you love most about quilting?
It’s a lot like baking; it’s precise and technical but I get to put my own spin on it and make something for other people to enjoy. It’s a fun creative outlet
What’s on your design wall?
Nothing right now, it’s packed away until I get the sewing room painted
What do you stitch with?
Either my Kenmore or my new fancy straight stitch machine
When did you join the Salt Lake Modern Quilt Guild?
2013
What do you do when you’re not quilting?
I enjoy reading, baking, walking with my dog, and also playing with makeup or nails
